BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS – Several times crowned Calypso monarch of St. Kitts and Nevis and three times Leeward Islands Monarch and the youngest St Kitts and Nevis Member of Parliament, Hon. Konris Maynard has lashed out at what he said is the attempted censorship of calypsonian by operatives or functionaries of the Team Unity Government.
“This is disturbing and should be frowned upon as the National Carnival Committee through its chairman, Noah Mills, is attempting to force calypsonians to produce their creative pieces and they making a determination as to whether or not they can sing in a tent,” Maynard disclosed Wednesday.
He described the new policy of the National Carnival Committee as “horrible.”
“We do not support this and although there might be pretty words used as for the reason for doing this, it all fits in with the capsule of censorship and that should never be allowed with respect to the art form especially an art form of calypso where it is the voice of the ordinary man to do his social and political commentary,” said Maynard.
